The Voice of the Bay: Saturday, May 4, 2019

The Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation is excited to announce a new youth vocal competition “The Voice of the Bay” to coincide with Bay Day Events: Green Day in the Bay, Run the Bay, and Recycle Day in the Bay on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at Klode Park.

From these submissions, 10 finalists will be accepted into the competition to perform on the Green Day in the Bay entertainment stage before a judge’s panel of professional Milwaukee vocalists.

Judges include Julie Brandenburg of Be Sound Music, Ally Hart of the Amplified Artist Sessions, and Tom Riddle of Stories Studio. A grand prize package, which includes a complimentary studio recording session, will be awarded to one contestant for their outstanding vocal performance.

There is a special performance prize, as a guest of the Amplified Artist Sessions, for one singer-songwriter who has at least 5-6 original songs in their repertoire and can accompany themselves on guitar or piano.

Submission Guidelines and Instructions

  • Must be a permanent resident of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin
  • Competition open to grades 5-12
  • Solo vocal performers only
  • This is a vocal performance competition. Due to limited stage time and space, accompanists cannot be accommodated. If a finalist would like to accompany themselves on piano or guitar, that may be arranged in advance of the event. Pre-recorded backing tracks must be provided by the 10 finalists prior to the event. More details will be provided to the 10 finalists at a later date.

In addition to the video link, provide the following information in the text of your message:

  7. Name of song selection (title and recording artist) and one alternate song
  8. Indicate if your performance piece is an original composition and/or how many completed original compositions are you able to perform in a live, public setting
  • Ten finalists will be announced on April 5th via the Whitefish Bay Civic Foundation website and Facebook page.
  • Judges will be looking at voice quality (vocal intonation and projection, accuracy of pitch), diction, timing, and dynamics (proper emphasis or accent on words, softness and loudness, rhythm), musicality (appropriateness of the chosen song to the voice of the singer), breathing and phrasing, interpretation and stage presence.
  • This is a family friendly event. Song selection and attire must be appropriate for an audience of all ages. Any style of music is acceptable.
  • The song that is submitted will be the song that is performed unless arrangements are made with the event coordinator in advance of the show. Song selection is important and should be a good match for the singer’s voice.
  • There will be a special prize awarded to one (1) original singer-songwriter. To be considered, a candidate must have at least 5-6 songs in their repertoire. The singer-songwriter who is chosen for this prize will have the opportunity to perform live at the Amplified Artists Sessions “songwriter-in-the-round” at Saloon on Calhoun in Brookfield on July 11th.
  • The overall winner of the vocal competition will receive a prize package that includes a professional recording session at Stories Studios for one song.

Judges’ Bios

Julie Brandenburg - Composer, songwriter, producer, and educator in the Milwaukee area. She is the owner of Be Sound Music, a lesson center and recording studio on Milwaukee's East Side. She has composed for film, stage, and has recorded several albums in a variety of styles. Billboard magazine described her voice as "soaring."

Ally Hart - Co-Founder/Organizer of Amplified Artist Sessions an original music showcase featuring artists from across the Midwest. Lead vocalist of the alternative power-pop band Dear Karma from Milwaukee, WI, whose music has been featured on Fox 6 and 88.9 Radio Milwaukee.

Tom Riddle - A working musician and mentor for nearly 30 years, Tom brings a unique mix of classical and practical knowledge of the human voice. Owner/Engineer/Instructor - Stories Studio, MKE. Vocalist for: Lithic, Decibel Fix, and Mixtape.
